Writing the monster

Writing when there’s something that could be trying to get outside of you is a peculiar kind of thing. You’re walking around, going about your day, and then there are these sudden thoughts, phrases, development of ideas. You have to sit yourself down daily and fix that ephemera into words on a page before they vanish. And you have to feed the monster. The writing is a kind of exercise for the monster. It grows as a result. But you also have to feed it. And then it means you’re walking around, minding your business, monster in tow, everywhere you go. It’s not often they have places to park the monster, though there are places.
